Episode 149 (alt): The Fantastic Forelock

The original version has better sound quality, but some portions of the conversation are jumbled. This version has all the audio in the right order, but Jon’s track is not that pleasant to listen to due to recording difficulties. You get to choose which you listen to.

Welcome to Make Ours Marvel, the weekly show where Michael Kaiser and Jon M. Wilson read chronologically through Marvel Comics’ spandex adventures and discuss their thoughts with little to no authority.

In this episode…

  • Tales of Suspense #90
  • Strange Tales #157
  • Fantastic Four #63
  • The Avengers #40

  1. Tales of Suspense #90: Tony builds a smaller softening gun, and wears the older armor. It was weird to have the cops ask on the last page “Where is Stark and the other Iron Man?” and Tony reply “They’ll be out here soon.” Does this mean Tony has stated the different armors are worn by different people? I get the idea of saying that the original armor is a relic, but the person inside? Such a drama queen!

Cap vs Bubble Red Skull! LOL! Thanks for that, Michael! And I got a kick out of Cap’s improvised grappling hook using his shield. Total Batman action. The shield as batarang.

Strange Tales #157: Fury fights Strucker’s Satan’s Claw’s zappers. I likewise was confused about the first few pages, since they didn’t convey Fury’s escape well. But the art is snappy! Now if someone can explain how taking a pill turns your clothes invisible… oh right, unstable molecules, never mind.

Strange on a Zom meeting and a damn forelock. If you get both of the sneaky puns in that sentence, you’re welcome. But really, Strange wins from pulling his hair. One, ow. Two, “classy.”

Fantastic Four #63: Sandman and Blastaar. Blasty’s character has a way to go to be interesting, but his design is just so Kirby, I totally dig it. Sandman though, I’m not sold on his new look. You guys talked about his tunic and headpiece. I thought two issues ago he’d said that he made it himself and filled it with gadgets, and that’s why it specifically is not part of his body, like his clothes used to be. And that’s a problem with this redesign because one of his tactics is to turn completely sandy so he can’t be punched. Now he can’t do that without losing his weapons. Meh.

The Avengers #40: Sub-Mariner Cosmic Cubed. I like Namor used the cube to keep moist. It’s like that second episode of Nu (Dr) Who, with the woman who was just skin and eyes, with a servant being told “moisturize me” all the time. “Imperius spritz!”

Great show as always! Until next time, or until Herc gets Namor out of the blues by doing what he does best, “punch first, think later,”* make mine Make Ours Marvel.
