Strange Tales #144: Dugan’s quote, “I’m dead! And I landed in the wrong place! ‘Cause Fury’s voice would *never* be up above!” Absolutely hilarious!
And Dr Strange *still* hasn’t rescued Cle–uh—the girl. Right. I’ve been enjoying a lot of the Eternity saga, but it just goes on forever. (Get it? “Forever”? “Eternity”? Have I made this joke before?)
Seriously, the lady villain from the last 2 issues was unnamed. White-haired girl is unnamed. Meanwhile, triangle-shaped floating mask face Asti the All-Seeing has a name. Not a good look.
The Fantastic Four #50: Remember how you guys notes the Galactus trilogy only had 2 comics worth of story? Also remember that I first read this in a Treasury Edition that left out half of issue #48? Well, guess what! That Treasury also left out the last half of issue #50. The story ends with the Surfer flying off, and Alicia walking down the stairs from the roof, calling after Ben. It really worked great for giving a complete story, but also a taste of more drama to come.
Years later, I got to read the complete #50, and gotta say, I enjoyed the trilogy better without the “Return of the King” multiple endings. But, reading this as a monthly FF comic, that makes the hints of future stories and subplots work. Does that make sense? If I want to just read Galactus, I’d want to skip the extra stuff. But on an FF read-thru, the extra stuff is great. Just IMHO.
Wyatt Wingfoot. I knew about him from #50, but hadn’t read any more stories with him until Byrne brought him back, and he’s one of my favorite characters from that era. I’m very excited to read these original stories.
Tales of Suspense #77: Iron Man & Mandarin & Ultimo. LOL at computing Ulty with Dr Manhattan! I hadn’t thought about that. Great call!
Yes, I am still utterly confused about Mandarin. His motivations keep switching on a dime in every appearance about being after Stark or Iron Man, and never truly explaining either. Just make him the evil twin of Tony already! At least that’s simple!
Cap and unnamed woman (oh no, not again) being in love, and she’s never seen him without his mask. If this was an Alan Moore or Grant Morrison book, there would be an explanation that would NOT fly with the Comic Code Authority.
How does Cap have a picture of this woman? We’re accepting he kept it or sent it home, from occupied France? Or wait, is this evidence that Steve is an artist, and it’s not a photograph, but a drawing he made? We readers can’t tell the difference, but it could be a drawing.
