Avengers: The Old Order Wimpeth Out! I’ve seen this issue’s classic cover plenty, but long after I knew the gist of the story. It pretty much gives away the new lineup, doesn’t it, showing the current Avengers, the Masters of Evil, and three reluctant villains not seen in this comic before. I wonder if readers were savvy enough back then to guess the lineup from the cover. Hmmm.
Is this the triumphant return of THE SOFTENER??!! No. No it is not.
Strange Tales: Torch and Thing against Puppet-less Master. This story. It was banana-pants senseless. I still have no idea why the cat was turned into a statue. Seriously. Maybe there’s a panel in Alex Ross’ Marvels that clears it up. Mmmmm, nope.
Dr Strange versus Bellatrix Lestrange. Ok, the sorceress’ name is Shazana, but I like the battle of names for Strange vs Lestrange. And also, Dr Strange sure doesn’t try too hard to learn people’s names. He never asks blonde-haired orange-wearing half-sister’s name. He still doesn’t know white-haired pink-wearing Dark Dimensionista’s name. “I’m a busy sorcerer, no time for pleasantries, gotta overthrow another dimension’s government before my tee time. Busy, busy!”
Well, now I’m wondering if “Shazana” was a riff on “Zatanna”. She debuted a mere year before this issue. Interesting.
Until Dr Strange meets the Wizard of Oz, make mine Make Ours Marvel.
