Great discussion of Captain Marvel! Always fun to have Sara on the show.
I went on a Carol Danvers read in 2017-2018(?) for her solo books on the Marvel Unlimited app. That was lots of fun, and no doubt, Kelly Sue Deconnick’s run won me over big time. There was so much heart in that series. A re-read is called for to better appreciate it.
It’s also remarkable how much of Carol’s history involves memory problems.
1. When she gets her powers and has a split personality.
2. Rogue steals her powers and memories.
3. Sacrifices her memories to stop Yon-Rogg.
I don’t know what this means, but it’s kind of a troubling pattern.
I enjoyed the movie a lot! Was it one of my top Marvel Studios movies? No, I’d put it lower in the ranking. But that still makes it a pretty great movie. So many good characters, young Fury, Goose the Flerkin, Monica and Maria, the twist on the Kree/Skrull enmity, MCU Mar-Vell.
And Brie as Carol was just spot on for me. Her sarcasm was very Star-Lord-ish without being a copy. And of course, “I have nothing to prove to you.” YES!
The capper is I saw it with my 13-year-old twin daughters. They adored it! Then, about a week later, I asked their Sunday School class (about a dozen 8th graders, mostly girls) if any of them had seen this movie. Every hand shot up. The girls were gushing and the phrase “Brie is a queen” was shared. That tells me, beyond my own tastes, the filmmakers have struck a chord with young folks, especially girls. That cannot be understated. I look forward to seeing how this film and character will be regarded in the future.
Well, I did it again. I was going to say something short, and … yeah.
Thanks, Marvel Movie-ohs!
