Episode 4: With Great Power

Welcome to Make Ours Marvel, the weekly show where Michael Kaiser and Jon M. Wilson read chronologically through Marvel Comics’ spandex adventures and discuss their thoughts with little to no authority.

In this episode…

  • The Incredible Hulk #2 (Jul 1962)
  • Amazing Fantasy #15 (Aug 1962)

Images from Discussion:

Incredible Hulk #2 Because kids don't understand magnets anyway! Awkward... Who needs Hulk? Bruce Banner saves the day! Self-imprisonment. Amazing Fantasy #15 Jack Kirby Spider-Man designs by way of Steve Ditko's memory. If they only knew...I have to feed on human blood now... Selfishness kills. Marvel's first motivated super-hero is born!

  1. I’m back again with a few more thoughts on Episode 4!

Hulk #2- Yes, Ross is terrible. I’m pretty sure he always stays terrible. Wait until you see what he does at his daughter’s second wedding in two or three decades. By the way, Sensational She-Hulk #2 has some fun as she fights the Toad Men as well.

Amazing Fantasy #15- What else can we say about this issue. It’s pretty much a perfect story. One thing that I can’t help but think since it was pointed out (by Lily I think in Avengers Inspirations) is that it’s pretty much a Super-Villain origin, Peter could have so gone the other way and wanted revenge on the world for Uncle Ben if he didn’t take responsibility for it himself.
Speaking of Uncle Ben, I can see him being a lot older than Peter’s father (or is it mother?). My dad is one of 6 kids and there is an over twenty year age gap between his oldest and youngest siblings. That would make sense for the time that Ben and his siblings would have been born (based on the year this story was published). Since no other family is mentioned I wonder if that means all of the others died early, like at five years old or younger. That family really is filled with tragedy!

One more thing. The Thousand was the arc in the first three issues of Spider-Man’s Tangled Web (2001). It was supposed to be a series for Spidey like Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight. Each arc would feature a different creative team telling a story from a different era. This one was by the Hitman creative team of Garth Ennis and John (yes I know he spells it wrong) McCrea. I remember it being fun and weird but Ennis does not like most super-heroes except for Superman so I don’t think Spidey comes out looking too great. You should however read issue 4, Severence Package by Greg Rucka and Eduardo Risso about a lieutenant for the Kingpin that has to tell his boss why a plan was ruined by Spider-Man. Really great stuff.

All in all, still enjoying the show. Looking forward to Thor!
